Worked example: 6,000 contacts, 4 texts a month and 175-character messages

The same inputs as the calculator above. A 175-character GSM-7 message bills as two segments (ceil(175 / 153)), so 6,000 contacts × 4 messages × 2 segments = 48,000 billable segments. Contact overage uses 1,000-contact blocks; segment overage uses 1,000-segment blocks; extra seats are monthly; the annual discount applies to all recurring charges. Every rate is user-entered; the table is calculated from your inputs, not a vendor quote.

Calculated from the rates shown. Rates are examples you can edit. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does SMS marketing cost?
It depends on contacts, monthly message volume, message-segment billing, seats and each plan's included allowances. The calculator combines those inputs into a monthly total and a year-one cost; it does not assert vendor prices.
What is a message segment?
A message segment is the billable unit carriers use. A GSM-7 text of up to 160 characters bills as one segment, and longer texts bill as multiple 153-character segments. A Unicode text (emoji or non-Latin characters) bills as one segment up to 70 characters and 67 per segment beyond that.
Why did my 175-character message count as two segments?
Because it is longer than the 160-character single-segment limit: in GSM-7 it bills as ceil(175 / 153) = 2 segments. The calculator applies that split before charging segment overages.
What is a contact overage?
Plans include a contact tier and charge per additional block, usually per 1,000 contacts. The calculator charges whole blocks above the included count.
What is a segment overage?
Plans include a monthly segment allowance and charge per additional block, usually per 1,000 segments. The calculator charges whole blocks above the included allowance.
Why does the cheapest plan change at 3,376 contacts?
Plan A has the lowest base price but the smallest segment allowance. At 3,375 contacts it is still cheapest at this message mix; at 3,376 the extra segment block puts Plan B ahead.
Why does Plan C take over at 8,126 contacts?
Plan B includes 60,000 segments and charges $7 per extra 1,000; Plan C includes 200,000 at a higher base. At 8,126 contacts Plan B costs $151.00/mo and Plan C costs $149.00/mo, so Plan C takes the lead.
Does the annual discount apply to overages?
In this model the discount applies to all recurring charges, including contact, segment and seat overages. Some vendors exclude add-ons; enter the discount that reflects the subscription-only saving.
Are these real SMS marketing prices?
No. Every rate is user-entered; the presets are example rates, not vendor quotes.
What is not included?
Taxes, currency conversion, MMS, WhatsApp, RCS, short codes, number registration fees, managed services and enterprise custom quotes are out of scope.

Methodology

Monthly total = plan base + contact-block overage + segment-block overage + extra-seat charges; the annual discount applies to all recurring charges. Message segments follow the GSM-7 (160 single, 153 multipart) and Unicode (70 single, 67 multipart) split. All prices are user inputs.
