Add Custom Repository Rules (Optional)

Add company-specific, local config, or secret files you want ignored in this repository (e.g., .env.local, secrets.json, dump/).

How .gitignore Pattern Matching Works

* and ? Wildcards

* matches zero or more characters within a path component (e.g. *.log ignores all log files). ? matches exactly one character.

** Recursive Match

Two consecutive asterisks match directories across multiple nested levels (e.g. **/build/ ignores any folder named build anywhere in the repository).

! Negation Exception

Prefixing a pattern with ! negates a previous rule, re-including a file or folder (e.g. !.vscode/settings.json).

Pro Tip: Ignoring Already Tracked Files

If a file was already committed to Git before being added to .gitignore, Git will continue tracking its changes. To un-track it without deleting the local file on your machine, run:

git rm --cached path/to/file
git commit -m "Stop tracking ignored file"

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a .gitignore file?
A .gitignore file tells Git which files, folders, or patterns to exclude from tracking and version control, preventing build artifacts, secret keys, dependencies, and OS metadata from being committed.
What if a file is already committed to Git?
If a file was tracked before adding it to .gitignore, Git will continue monitoring changes. Run git rm --cached <file> in your terminal to remove it from Git tracking without deleting the file locally.
Does this tool support multiple languages in a monorepo?
Yes. You can select multiple languages, tools, and frameworks (e.g. Node, Python, Docker, macOS) and the generator will seamlessly merge and deduplicate their patterns into one consolidated file.
